Aaron Altherr, Old Mister!

Landing a spot in BA’s Phillies top-10 list, Aaron Altherr’s name came as perhaps the biggest shocker. I liked him pretty much immediately upon hearing his name…

Altherr may or may not have been born in Germany (different sources say different things: Germany or Buckeye, AZ). Either way, his last name translates from German to English as “Old Mister.” Who wouldn’t love a guy named Aaron Old Mister, ranked in slot zehn?
According to BA’s report, Dom Brown is the only Phillies OF prospect with higher upside than Altherr. Considering the seemingly ever-present uncertainty surrounding the Phillies’ OF, it’ll be interesting to keep an eye on Altherr while he’s at Lakewood this upcoming season.
Sometimes I get good feelings about people or events. I had one about Michael Vick’s comeback when he got out of jail/house arrest. Now look where he is. It happened all the time when players stepped up to the plate this past season…I would get a sudden feeling they were about to blast it out of the park. Sure enough, there it went. Last season, at Northwestern baseball’s final home game against Michigan State, utility man Paul Snieder came up to the plate with a couple men on base. It was the bottom of the ninth. I leaned over to my fellow beat-writer and said, “Walk-off home run right here.” Next pitch, wham-bam, thank you ma’am, that puppy went right on over the fence.
From my experience, when I get strong feelings, I’m about 90-percent right. (I was wrong about the Eagles going to the Super Bowl last year, and the jury’s still out on my freakishly good feeling about Tyson Gillies.) But I’m going to say it now: I think Altherr’s going to have a good year with the BlueClaws next year, and I think his will be a name you’ll hear a lot some years down the line.
Let’s hope that one doesn’t fall in my 10-percent wrong!
